No one was more disappointed than me when, earlier this month, I had to pull "The One" Vinny Dunn from his scheduled IPW New Zealand Heavyweight Championship match against Reuben de Jong at Breakdown. OK, I'm sure Vinny was more disappointed, but you get the point. The fact of the matter was though, that Vinny's groin injury was only 60% healed and had we gone ahead with the bout, it could have spelt disaster - the end of his career. Nobody wants to see that. Least of all "The One's" fans. Look, Vinny and I have been friends for many years (although it's fair to say that friendship is somewhat strained now that I'm in my role as Commissioner). There is just no way that I could've been responsible for putting him in unnecessary danger, no matter how much he, or the fans, wanted the match. I understand that in the weeks since, though, that Vinny has made tremendous progress and is well on track for the big showdown with Reuben de Jong on August 21 at Rival Turf!
In the industry, we call that a shoot. It's the battle of the biggest man to ever grace a New Zealand wrestling ring, a seemingly unstoppable monster, taking on the man who is without a doubt the most popular kiwi wrestler to come along this century. A man with so much guts and determination, that he may just be able to topple de Jong. I'm hedging my bets though. We saw de Jong pushed to the limit by "The Samoan Silverback", but just when the Champion appeared to be on the ropes, he found top gear and pushed Alexander away. With scary precision and ease. We've never seen de Jong take on a fresh Vinny Dunn. That is an interesting and exciting proposition. And let's not forget about the double-ring bout featuring Team IPW (lead by Alexander) taking on Team WPW. It's Auckland vs. Wellington in the ultimate provincial battleground. I can't help but feel Team WPW will regret interfering in IPW's business. They want to make a name for themselves? Not on my watch. If WPW think for one moment that we're intimidated; if they think for one moment that they'll gain dominance from this company, then they're sadly mistaken. I've heard rumblings of the men they're planning on putting forth for Team WPW. I'll admit, there are some talented wrestlers heading north if my sources are correct. But I'm personally assembling a team that I expect will not just meet this challenge head on, but destroy it. It's clear to me that the CWO of WPW didn't think this through too well. You want to make a name for yourself by taking us down? That's not going to happen. Never back a rabid dog into a corner - you might just get bitten. I've never been more excited for an IPW event than I am for Rival Turf. August 21 at Westlake Boys High School. Be there to witness history. I guarantee it'll be a night that you'll never forget. |
